If you have never seen the CrossFit Games.  Or if you were one of the unlucky ones who didn’t get a ticket because they sold out.  No worries.  ESPN2 has been running re-runs of the amazing competition.  Episodes will be airing tonight with more coming in the future.  Click HERE for the schedule.

CrossFit has grown (now that’s an understatement, if I’ve ever seen one!).  Okay, let me put it this way…….CROSSFIT HAS FRICKIN’ EXPLODED!  As I sit here and reflect back on the last 5 1/2 years that I have been around CrossFit, I have many different feelings.  Many others that have been around CrossFit for a while will tell you that they also have mixed feelings about such a rapid increase in the popularity of this “Sport of Fitness” that we have all grown to love.

A great way to gauge the growth of CrossFit is to take a look back on the history of the competition that we call The CrossFit Games.  For those of us that have been around since the beginning of the Games remember traveling to “The Ranch”.  This was the venue for the first three Games.  A small, dirt ranch located in Northern California.  We called it the “Woodstock of Fitness”.

*2007 – This was the first year of the CrossFit Games.  70 competitors and about 150 fans.  3 events and the winners took home maybe $500 each.

*2008 - The second year witnessed a huge increase in both competitors and fans.  300 athletes competed that year with approximately 800 fans cheering them on.

*2009 –  This was the final year at “The Ranch”.  Regional qualifiers were added due to too many athletes wanting to compete.  This marked the Global explosion of the Games.

*2010 –  This was the first year at the Home Depot Center located in Carson, California.  It was obvious that the Games had out grown “The Ranch” in Aromas, California.  An additional qualifier was also added.  In additional to the the Regionals, the Sectionals were added.

*2011 –  Reebok comes on board with a 10-year title sponsorship which raised the total prize purse to $1 million.  Eliminated sectionals and replaced with the Opens.  26 thousand people participated in the Opens.

*2012 –  Home Depot Center sales out within a week or two.  The Opens saw something like 70 thousand people world-wide participate.

*2013 –   What is to come?

Although I do miss the “The Ranch” and that feeling……..that I just can’t describe that came along with it, I am very excited to see the growth of CrossFit.  It truly is hard to keep such a good thing hidden from the world!
