P.U.N.C.T.U.A.L.I.T.Y………..WOW, pretty big word. But what does it mean? I’m sure that you could ask numerous people, and you would get many different responses.
Merriam-Webster defines Punctuality as: [more punctual; most punctual] : arriving or doing something at the expected or planned time
▪ The trains were punctual. ▪ a punctual employee
We here, at CrossFit Inland Valley define it as: Showing up to class 5 to 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. NOT, running in the door 5, 10 or 15 minutes after the scheduled start time.
Now, we realize that sometimes “STUFF” happens. We fully understand that sometimes no matter how hard you try, something gets in your way preventing you from being punctual. We are cool with that. As long as it is the exception, NOT the rule. Showing up late to a class makes it much harder on the coach and it really just isn’t fair to the other CFIV family members that have shown up on time.
NEW RULE: If you show up late and it is GREATER than 5 minutes from the scheduled start time of the class, It is then at the discretion of the Coach to decide wether or not to allow you to participate or inform you that you will need to wait until the next class.

Really, I would be extremely disappointed if this was to happen to me or my family. I would hate to drive 1 to 2 hours go get home to workout instead of just going home and calling it a day, just to be turned away.

I’d like to begin by saying that my intentions are not to offend. Also I’m sure you did not mean to offend any of the cross fit members by the “punctuality” post. Nevertheless I do intend to be very forward and offer a clients perspective. As a client/CFIV member… The post conveyed a rather arrogant and sardonic tone. We pay you. We pay you to coach us regardless of whether we are late or not and because we pay, we do not expect to be told to “sit this one out” or “wait for the next class.” If we are late it is up to us to get caught up or just pick up where we can. In addition it is not the coaches business to know why we are late so that they can decided whether or not we deserve to workout. Everyone appreciates punctuality but its not always the case for whatever reason. You must remember What may be the exception to one individual may not be the same to another. A lot of us come to get a workout in and to be surrounded by the people that motivate us. In the post we were provided with the Merriam Webster definition of “punctuality” as if we are all ignoramus and do not suspect the meaning of being punctual. We are not in high school gym class, we are not your kids and we are not your employees. So instead of treating your members as adolescent or insubordinate you could try motivating your members by decreasing or increasing end times.
For example…9/12/2012 All levelsSkill workout: 10 min Pistols12 min AMRAP200 meter run10 pull ups10 wall balls Bobby Joe comes in late five minutes. He catches up on warm ups and skill work. For the AMRAP He completes 5 rounds of 200 meter run, 10 pull ups and 10 wall balls. But because he was late I dock him 1 round. So for the record board it shows as only 4 rounds. That’s just an idea… and THAT should be up to the coach but we should not be turned away from wanting to workout. Its better to come a few minutes late than to not come at all. I understand that as coaches you want us to be better and push us and motivate us. So do it. Motivate us.
Emery,
I can totally understand why you would be extremely disappointed if you were told to wait for the next class or turned away. That would really suck! That’s not our intention here.
Your situation is unique because you are traveling such a distance from work and it is challenging for you to get there on time. This “new rule” is not intended for people in your situation. We are GRATEFUL that you choose to come and allow us the privilege to coach you after you have spent such a long day at work!
The intention of this post, is to remind those individuals that show up late to try their hardest not to. The last thing that we want is for someone to get injured as a result of not being able to adequately warm up prior to the WOD because they were late.
A huge Thank You to you and your family for your continued support of CrossFit Inland Valley!
Sincerely,
Justus
WOD 5:44. First day back after being sick, super glad to be back!!
Totally understand the punctuality post. My old box did the same. I doubt anyone (especially in special situations or non-repeat offenders) would actually be turned away if a few minutes late…I think it serves more as a reminder to members to try to be punctual so classes can flow accurately, which is understandable.
I felt pretty good tonight.

WOD 5:44. First time in this week after a knarly cold, glad to be back!!
I understand the punctuality post. My old box had a similar rule posted on the wall. To me it’s more of a reminder to members to do our best to be on time and prepared. Totally acceptable to expect that of us. We certainly expect the trainers to be on time and ready! Almost had an issue tonight- we were only 3 min late though (lol sorry Carlie!) but post did make me think about waiting until the 6:30 if needed. And sometimes we will probably have to wait with the new class schedule.
Press 95# WOD 6:14 This mini heat wave killed me during the 12:30 class!
As for the dilemma pertaining to the CFIV fam’s “punctuality”, I think the rule is a good one. I have a busy work schedule and make it a point to be on time. This way the class can start and finish on time. It sometimes can be bothersome and unfair when individual’s show up late and therefore cause the class to get pushed back. Even if it is only pushed back for a few minutes, this causes me to have to rush to get to work. I believe the “post” was not intended to be “arrogant” and neither did I perceive it that way. I want to thank Justus and the CFIV staff for advising every one of the issue, this way we as a family can fix it. I do believe that other members have valid points. Having said that, I too am a paying customer. I pay to go to classes that start and finish on time. Decreasing or increasing members WOD times is probably not the best way to tackle this issue. Your WOD time is set in stone and should never be changed due to showing up late. Maybe a burpee penalty should be done after your WOD, if you show up late. I honestly do not see any of our amazing coaches telling people to sit this one out or to come later. How about this, everyone shows up to work out on time. If for some reason you are late, don’t worry about it. Just don’t make it a habit…
Well said Robert! We all understand that there are certain circumstances that cannot be helped (like Emery’s) and the coaches understand that. The point of this post, I think, was to continue to promote teamwork and camaraderie, which is the way it’s been from day one. It wasn’t to treat us as children, employees or a “gym class”. I think it was a great post and meant for our safety as far as warming up correctly. We are ALL paying customers, and I pay to be there on time. Let’s not look into this more than we need to! Bottom line- Make it an EFFORT to be on time!!!
Thanks Justus!
